Workshop 1:  Health Systems Modelling: Advances, Challenges, Opportunities

When and where:  Mon-Tue 24-25 Feb 2014; The Auditorium, The Kenneth Myer Building, cnr Genetics Lane and Royal Parade, University of Melbourne, Parkville

Scope:  The use of conceptual, analytical, and computational modelling techniques for: health systems design, resource allocation, strategic, operational, and tactical planning of care systems and processes, health outcome evaluation, and medical decision making

Target Audience and Presenters:  Health planners, managers, clinicians, researchers, practitioners, consultants and policy makers involved or interested in health systems modelling methods, examples of their use and potential

Guest speakers:

  • Professor Sally Brailsford, University of Southampton, UK.  Sally is a Professor of Management Science and a world-leading expert in health systems modelling who has worked in healthcare modelling for over 20 years.  Her research interests include simulation methodologies, discrete event simulation, system dynamics, health service research and disease modelling, and the modelling of human behaviour in healthcare systems.  Sally is a Vice-President of the Association of European Operational Research Societies (EURO) and serves as the Chair of the EURO Working Group on OR Applied to Health Services (ORAHS). She is an editor of the Health Systems Journal, and is on the editorial board of Health Care Management Science, Operations Research for Health Care, and the Journal of Simulation. She is one of the co-founders of the UK Network for Modelling & Simulation in Healthcare (MASHnet).
  • Dr Geoff McDonnell, UNSW & Adaptive Care Systems, Australia.  Geoff is a physician and engineer with two decades experience in dynamic modelling teaching, consulting and research in health and eHealth.  He received Simulation Australia's Achievement Award in 2011 as a great Australian pioneer in health systems simulation and health informatics.
  • Dr Andrei Borshchev, CEO, AnyLogic Company.  Andrei has a PhD from St Petersburg Technical University, Russia, and post-doc experience at HP Bristol Labs. He teaches and presents regularly at International Meetings and Courses, covering a wide range of multi-method applications and techniques. He is the author of The Big Book of AnyLogic.
  • Assoc Professor Atte Meretoja, Helsinki University Central Hospital, Finland & Royal Melbourne Hospital, Australia.  Atte Meretoja, MD, PhD, MSc(StrokeMed), received his clinical neurology and research training at the University of Helsinki, Finland. For his thesis he set up the Finnish national stroke registry PERFECT Stroke. In the area of health systems research, he was the first to report the effectiveness of modern primary and comprehensive stroke centres and described the world fastest thrombolysis service in Helsinki.  He has served on the boards of the Finnish Medical, Neurological, and Stroke Societies, and on several committees of the European Stroke Organisation.

Workshop 2:  Health Systems Modelling with AnyLogic

When and where:  Wed 26 Feb 2014; Room 66, Building 8, Level 9, RMIT University, City campus, 414-418 Swanston Street, Melbourne

Scope:  Combining discrete-event, system dynamics, and agent-based simulation for multiscale modelling of health systems

Target Audience: Researchers, students, modelling practitioners, and everyone wishing to advance their understanding of the use of AnyLogic for health care systems modelling

Presenters:
